Celebrating in Larnaca
Larnaca is where most visitors to Cyprus land, and that shapes its celebrations. Couples who live abroad often come home to marry here, and on a wedding weekend half the family may arrive on the same morning flights. The town itself is relaxed: a palm-lined seafront, the stone church of Saint Lazarus at the heart of the old town, and a ring of villages where weddings and christenings still fill the square.
Venues and seasons
- Historic churches in the old town and the neighbourhoods, many with a courtyard or square for photos after the service.
- Seafront restaurants and beach hotels east and west of the centre.
- Village tavernas and community halls in the district, with long tables and live music.
- Gardens and countryside venues a short drive inland, popular for summer receptions.
The season is long and mild. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months, and in summer the sea breeze keeps seafront evenings bearable.
Customs
Larnaca families keep the island’s wedding customs close. Friends make the couple’s bed and toss coins on it, the koumbaros or koumbara exchanges the wedding crowns in church, and at the reception the couple stand at the entrance to receive wishes and envelopes. The money dance comes later, with notes pinned on the bride’s dress and the groom’s jacket. At christenings, guests leave with small favours from the godparent.
Tips for a Larnaca celebration
- Relatives arriving on the day. Send the digital invitation early. Guests landing at the airport see the schedule, the map for the church and the reception, and an "Add to calendar" button.
- RSVP before the flights are booked. RSVP records adults, children and meal choices, with reminder e-mails for those who forget.
- Family abroad who cannot come can follow the private feed as photos arrive and leave a written wish, and every wish goes into the wishbook.
- Photos outside the church. Put a QR code at the church gate. The best shots are often taken outside, while everyone waits for the couple or the baby, and the QR upload keeps them in full quality.
- Taverna with a TV? That is enough for the live photo wall.
