Celebrating in the capital
Nicosia weddings are famous for their size. Three hundred guests is a modest list here, and a thousand is not unusual when both families are from the city and its villages. The ceremony is usually in the couple’s parish church and the reception in a large hall or hotel ballroom on the edge of town, so on the day several hundred people move across the city at once. Christenings follow the same pattern on a smaller scale, often on a Sunday after the liturgy.
Venues and seasons
- Parish churches in the suburbs and the old churches inside the Venetian walls. Stone walls and crowded aisles make mobile signal patchy.
- Reception halls and hotel ballrooms, indoor and air-conditioned, built for very large receptions, with screens and an AV team.
- Restored houses and courtyards in the old town for smaller weddings, engagements and christening lunches.
- Village halls and gardens in the Nicosia district for family celebrations.
Nicosia is inland and the hottest town on the island. From June to August receptions start late in the evening. Many couples choose September, October or late spring instead, when evenings outside are comfortable.
Customs guests will expect
The days before the wedding belong to the families. Close friends and unmarried relatives make the couple’s bed and throw money and rice on it, and in some families the women still prepare the «προζύμια», the leaven for the wedding bread. The koumbaros and koumbara stand beside the couple in church, and at the reception the couple greet every guest in a long line, where most gifts arrive in envelopes. Later comes the money dance, when guests pin notes on the couple’s clothes.
Tips for a Nicosia wedding
- Send a digital invitation with the schedule and a map for the church and the hall. Guests from other towns, and those landing at Larnaca airport, find both without phoning anyone.
- Count properly with RSVP. Yes, maybe or no, adults and children, meal choice and allergies, then a CSV for the hall. With a list this size it saves weeks of calls.
- Put QR codes at the church door and on the tables. Photos and videos go up in full quality from the QR upload, and if the signal drops inside the church, uploads resume where they stopped.
- Use the hall’s screen for the live photo wall once dinner is over and the dancing starts.
- Offer bank details in gifts for guests who would rather not bring an envelope.
Which plan fits
A big Nicosia wedding usually needs RSVP and the live wall, so Story (€149 for a wedding) is the natural choice. Essential (€99) covers the invitation, RSVP and song requests. Christenings start at €79. See weddings, christenings and pricing, or open the wedding demo.
